How Much Are Those Hot Comics Worth Now? Pt. 1

In the first edition of How Much Are Those Hot Comics Worth Now?, I explore the “hot comics” that presaged and kicked off the Image Revolution. How much are they worth now? At least, by eBay standards?

Let’s start with some background.

From the years 1989 to about 1993 I almost solely collected comics as an investment, not to read. Bought multiples, put ‘em in the bags and boards, didn’t read them. I sucked, yeah.

Most of those comics are long gone. But I thought it would be fun to see how much riches they would have brought me. Note: these are all issues that were touted as so hot, I could use them to pay for my children’s college education.

  1. The more and more covers I see from the 90’s, the more and more glad I am that I got into comics post-Dork age.

  2. Question - the Superman #75 issues you saw - with all the trimmings (polybag, armband, etc., etc.) or just the issue itself?

  3. The Superman #75 was with the sealed polybag.
Without the polybag, the price drops a lot.
There was also — I think — a more deluxe version of this issue? With a sort of “granite” tombstoney cover?

  4. I think so. It went through A LOT of printings, though I would imagine the polybagged version is the most sought after and expensive, since it contained all the extras included. Unopened, that’s the ONLY version of it that I could see as worth any money… and MAYBE over twenty bucks in about a hundred years since an unopened version would be so rare, but still nowhere near the level of the general populace would’ve thought of it to be at the time.
